INTRODUCING OUR BELPER 250 PATRON – NIGEL VARDY

CHRISTENED AT ST PETER'S, Nigel is proud to have lived in Belper all his life like his parents before him and spent his formative years at Long Row School, followed by Strutts. After a 38-year career keeping Belper’s lights on with the East Midlands Electricity Board, Nigel has devoted himself to mountaineering, adventure and motivational speaking.

Says Nigel, “I grew up in a town packed with hosiery mills, and the pungent aromas of Thornton’s confectionery and oil from the Silkolene refinery, where everyone knew everyone and the East Mill shone like a beacon over us all.

“I have played in every wood, walked every path and probably drunk in every pub. Belper is a truly remarkable place with a distinctive charm and unique atmosphere that will endure for generations to come. And it’s an honour and a privilege to be part of this landmark year of celebration and commemoration for the town that I love.”
