Walk: Belper in Wartime 

Belper Memorial Gardens | 11am-1pm 

It's 107 years after the Armistice that ended the large scale fighting in the Great War. 

 

The world wars resulted in huge mobilisations of people and material that affected everywhere and everyone in this country and beyond. It caused rapid and often destructive social, economic and political change. Belper was no exception and in a two hour walk we'll look at some of the places where this can be appreciated.

Walk: Along Green Lane and Back Again

Belper Memorial Gardens, King Street | 2pm-4pm 

A short walk packed with history, along one of Belper's most interesting old lanes. Includes a visit to the Unitarian Chapel. Some uneven surfaces and a narrow channel.

Talk: A Celebration of the Belper Strutts in words and Pictures

No.28, Market place, Belper | 7pm

Jedediah Strutt, his sons and grandsons shaped Belper; at the same time managing and developing a business as large as any in the world. How should we remember them? What did they contribute to the Belper and Milford as we know them today?
The words used are from those who knew them and saw them live their lives. The images are as far as possible, of the period.

Preserving Belper’s Industrial Heritage

No.28, Market Place | 9am-1pm 

A project coordinated by Belper Historical Society (BHS), engaging with communities in and around Belper who may have family artifacts from Belper factories. Volunteer BHS ‘curators’ will help to collect, organise and preserve factory-related photographs, documents and artefacts, creating virtual scrapbooks. 

 

Once catalogued and digitised, original materials will be offered to the Derbyshire Record Office for long term storage.

Exhibition: Belper and the Railway

Belper Library, Derwent Street, 
Monday 16th November to Saturday 12th December | During normal library opening hours

A series of panels tell the story of the railway in Belper, from its construction in 1838/9, to the present day.

 

Wednesday November 18th

Talk: Entertaining Belper

Belper Library, Derwent Street | 7pm

An illustrated talk by Adrian Farmer. Belper Library, where big stars like Gracie Fields once performed, and the first moving images to be seen in Belper were screened, is the ideal venue for a look back at how Belper has entertained itself over the past two centuries. Adrian looks at menageries to funfairs, cinemas to theatre productions, carnivals to water fetes – and much more.

Thursday November 19th

Talk: Accidents at The Strutt Mills

Room 107, Strutts Community Centre | 7pm for 7.30pm

Talk by Trevor Lightfoot for Belper Historical Society. An accident book dating from 1827 to 1832 contains records of close to 1000 accidents that occurred in Belper mills. Trevor has looked closely at the book to see what we can learn about the safety record at the mills.

Free to members, £5 for visitors

Welcome Meal Project

No.28 Market Place, Belper | 12-2pm

The Welcome Meal Project is a monthly community meal run by volunteers and offers pay-what-you-can for soup, bread and a pudding is supported by Transition Belper

Talk: Belper in the Frame: The Post-War Era 

No.28, Market Place | 6pm

Last in a series of six talks by Adrian Farmer, looking at the past 250 years in Belper through historic images. This session concentrates on images which record the changing face of Belper from the end of the Second World War to the beginning of the 21st century.
