Four Charcters in Search of a Fortune

A new play with music directed by John Tams. Written by George Gunby & John Tams. Includes the world premiere of ‘The Derbyshire Suite’ by Peter Bullock featuring The Gabriella Swallow String Quartet. Set in the Derwent Valley, characters tells stories from Derby, Belper and Cromford as the mills built by Lombe, Strutt and Arkwright drove the Industrial Revolution.

Belper at War walk 

Meeting place TBA | 10am and 2pm

People tend not to associate Belper with military history, so it usually comes as a surprise just how much the town actually has. This three-hour walk around the town tells the story of Belper's military history, from the 1700s and the steps taken by the Strutts to protect the mills, to the 20th Century and one of the biggest secrets of the Second World War.

 

Booking via https://derbysheritagewalks.com/belper_at_war.htm with payment via a PayPal (other options available). Prices £3 per person, family rates £5 for 1 adult and up to 4 children, and £8 for 2 adults and up to 4 children.

Destination Belper 

Belper Unitarian Chapel, Field Row | 7pm

Adrian Farmer explores some of the reasons people have come to Belper over the centuries – to find work or start a business, as tourists, as refugees, or to use the wartime firing range. How were they met and treated by the people of Belper? And how did they shape the town of today? 

 

Refreshments available in the interval. No need to book, just turn up.

Life as a Mill Worker – North Mill Trust

No.28, Market Place | 6pm

Talk by Mary Wilson, the last in a series of five from the Belper North Mill Trust. Join Mary the 1805 mill worker for a light-hearted journey back in time to hear what she has to say about working at the new Cotton Spinning North Mill built and owned by the Strutt family. You will hear about Mill life, her family and living in Belper in the early 19th century.

The Belper Nightwatchmen Reports – A Halloween Ghost Walk 

Strutts Community Centre, Derby Road | Time TBC

A Halloween Ghost Walk by Kevin Fegan, presented by Company Blood Community Theatre. Join the Nightwatchman as he patrols the eerie streets of Belper, conjuring up strange characters and ghostly scenes from Belper nightlife in mid-nineteenth century England.

 

An immersive, promenade performance around the Strutts Community Centre on Halloween to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Belper town.

 

This is an indoor and outdoor show, please dress for the weather.
